Thoenen named plant operator of the year, city engineer also earns recognition

David Thoenen chuckles for a moment then says he has managed to avoid recognition for 20 years. It's unusual, after all, for anyone at a wastewater treatment plant to be in the public spotlight unless something goes terribly wrong.

But recently Mexico's wastewater plant supervisor received the Small Plant Operator Recognition Award from the Missouri Water Environment Association, naming him operator of the year.

"I was totally blown away," Thoenen said. "I just couldn't believe I got it."

Mexico Public Works Department director Kinsey Russell informed the City Council of the award during their regular meeting last week. Russell explained that one reason for his nomination was innovative approach to his role.

Thoenen developed a unique final clarifier skimming device to replace the facility's existing equipment that Russell says had a habit of breaking down and delaying operations.

"I have a pretty solid crew," Thoenen observed. "Everything has to stay running."

Thoenen has worked for the City of Mexico for more than 20 years. He holds an A certification for wastewater treatment. But he hardly expected such an honor.

"It was a surprise to him," Russell pointed out.

Another member of Mexico's Public Works team also earned recognition. Assistant city engineer Drew Williford graduates from the American Public Works Association Emerging Leaders Program today during the organization's national meeting in St. Louis.

Williford was one of only 16 accepted into the national program.

"I like to take an opportunity to brag on our department because we have a good team," Russell said of both honors. "I like to think we do good service to the community."

Thoenen jokes that the pressure is on now that he is operator of the year. Awards are a new thing for the wastewater department.

"Hopefully one of my other guys will get one next year," Thoenen said.
