Katie Bowen and Abby Drew took second in their weight classes at Seckman Tournament in Imperial on Saturday.
Mexico girls coach Tony Senor brought five wrestlers to the event. They came away with five individual match wins on the day, three of these by Bowen, who is having a standout year.
Bowen opened with two solid challengers in the 102 class. She put Hancock’s Zilynn Watt on the mat at the 3:04 mark and followed up by pinning Lily Meyer of Winfield at 3:02 – and this after wrestling the previous night at the Bulldogs’ home quad.
Her third match – round four on the scorecard – came against Alyssa King from St. Charles, who was unbeaten in 17 previous matches. Bowen tried to outlast her, but lost by fall at 2:56.
She rebounded in the final round, pinning Jackson’s Kaiden Weisbrod just before time expired in the first period.
Drew faced St. Genevieve’s Dakotah Meadows in round one and fell into immediate trouble. She lost by fall. But after a bye, Drew returned to the mat and battled Zoe Fisher of Pacific through two periods and into the third.
At the 5:06 mark she turned advantage into victory, pinning her foe from the 122 ranks.
Choice Foster faced only two opponents at 143, but both had strong seasons behind them. Emmaline Steel of Pacific had won 63 percent of her matches, while Jackson’s Kayla Hodges raised her arm after almost eight of ten.
Foster battled, but lost to both by fall. But in a field of three, her effort was good enough for bronze.
In the 132 class, Kaylynn Pehle finished just off the podium. She sent Jackson’s Trynity Vanek to the mat early in the second round for a win, but dropped the next three matches.
Brett Iman saved her best for last at 159. She lost her first two rounds by fall. But in that second match Iman fended off Madison Patrick of Windsor High School in Imperial until midway through the second round.
Her closing match went the distance, but Iman held the advantage throughout. She earned a 7-1 decision over Winfield’s Maddy Gerholdt.
