In a game dictated by defense, North Callaway Thunderbirds collected a decisive 40-0 win on the road Friday in Louisiana.
After a sluggish start, quarterback Braydn O’Neal opened up the scoring fest with a 77-yard ramble with 3:22 to go in the first quarter. A Matthew Webber extra point put the Thunderbirds up, 7-0.
Callaway would never look back, getting a 10-yard touchdown run from Manny Moreno with 9:33 in the second quarter. O’Neal would connect with Matt Blair at the 5:07 mark, followed by a two-point conversion from Manny Moreno. Trevor Ray would push it in from three yards out with 1:19 remaining in the half for a 28-0 lead at the intermission.
The T-Birds would pick up where they left off in the second half, as O’Neal connected with Payton Olsson for a touchdown.
Quarterback Sergio Moreno would add a touchdown pass of his own with 5:01 to go in the game, connecting with Cashton Holloway, wrapping up the night’s scoring.
The lopsided victory was a testament to the Thunderbirds’ impressive play on defense. Not only did they hold Louisiana scoreless, but they kept the Bulldogs pinned in their own territory for much of the night. As a result, the T-Birds found themselves working with a short field - and they capitalized.
O’Neal finished with 79 yards passing, including two touchdowns and an interception on 4-for-9 passing. He added 69 yards rushing, leading the team, on six carries. Trevor Ray carried the ball 14 times for 29 yards.
Quincy Hutt led Louisiana, with 102 yards on four rushes.
Next up, the Thunderbirds host South Callaway Friday night, with a 7 p.m. start time.
