Late free throws give Colonels 43-40 win vs Chamois
Chamois was hot in the fourth quarter, but that didn’t deter Missouri Military Academy.
The Colonels defeated Chamois 43-40 on Wednesday in the consolation semifinals of the Belle tournament, hitting late free throws after the Pirates took a three-point lead.
Nathan Dempsey and Tsengeg Bayasgalan each led MMA (5-6) with 13 points, Albert Ogutu followed with seven points, and Lucas Almeida had six points.
MMA had a 22-20 lead after some solid defense, head coach Roger Siwak said, but that was before a “roller coaster” second half.
Dempsey and Bayasgalan opened the third quarter with 3-pointers prior to a 32-26 MMA lead going into the fourth quarter, which was lost in the final eight minutes before being regained.
MMA faces Belle (7-9) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for fifth place.
MMA offense struggles in 61-48 loss to Plato
While the defense was there for Missouri Military Academy, the offense didn’t have enough to keep the pace with Plato.
The Colonels lost their first-round game Tuesday in the Belle tournament 61-48, after falling behind by as much as 20 points in the second half.
Nathan Dempsey and Tsengeg Bayasgalan each led MMA with 12 points, Kellan Mugisha followed with nine points, and Albert Ogutu had six points.
MMA was down 19-14 lead after the first quarter as Bayasgalan, Ogutu and Mugisha combined for 14 points. The Colonels stepped up the defense in the second quarter, allowing eight points, but still was down 27-21 at halftime.
