Two Vandalia residents injured

Ana M. Pearl, 19 and Joseph C. Fortney, 21, both of Vandalia sustained minor injuries in a two-vehicle accident at 6:19 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30 on eastbound U.S. Highway 54 at Audrain County Road 471.

According to Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident occured when the 2015 Ford Explorer driven by Fortney failed to observe stopped traffic and struck the rear of a 2014 Peterbilt truck trailer, driven by Merle L. James, 58, of Vandalia. James was not injured during the accident.

Fortney was transported to Audrain Community Hospital by ambulance and Pearl refused medical treatment. 

The Peterbilt received minor damage and was driven from the scene; the Explorer was totaled. All involved were wearing seatbelts and able to provide proof of insurance.
