The Van-Far boys basketball team’s postseason run ended in the championship game of the Class 2, District 5 Tournament against conference foe Clopton.

The Indians jumped out to an early lead in Saturday’s contest, but eventually fell 58-48 to the Hawks.

Van-Far ended the season with a 10-17 record. Clopton (18-10) advances to the sectional round where it will square off against Putnam County on Wednesday at Hannibal High School.

Sophomore Gage Gibson led the Indians with 11 points in the loss. Sophomore Carter Jennings followed with nine points, while sophomores Nikos Connaway and Brayden Lay each had eight points.

Van-Far advanced to the title game with a thrilling 58-55 triumph over top seed Cairo on Feb. 23. Connaway erupted for 26 points, including making three treys, as the Indians held a two-point lead at the half and outscored the Bearcats 22-12 in the third quarter.

However, they had to withstand a fourth-quarter rally as Cairo outscored them 27-17 in the final eight minutes of the game.

Lay also reached double figures with 12 points. Sophomore Morgan Regot added seven and Gibson followed with six points.

The Indians opened districts with a 50-31 win over Community R-6 in the opening round. Connaway led the way with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Gibson and Regot also reached double figures with 10 points apiece.

The Van-Far girls were the fifth seed in the district tourney and were upended by No. 4 Clopton 71-45 in a first-round contest on Feb. 19.

The Lady Indians ended the season with an 11-13 record.

Van-Far got down early against Clopton and could never recover. The Lady Indians trailed by five following the opening quarter and were outscored 39-20 in the middle two quarters.
