Van-Far’s duo of freshman DJ Long and senior LaTrell Wright proved dynamic as they combined for 42 points in a 61-49 win over Mark Twain Friday.

“Tonight was one of the best all-around games we have played this year,” said Van-Far coach, Pat Connaway. “We were really engaged and focused.”

Long scored 16 of his 21 points in the first half as Van-Far led 20-12 after one quarter and 32-24 at the half. Wright took over after the intermission, pouring in 16 of his 21 in the second half.

Wright finished with a double-double, adding 10 rebounds. Long was strong on the boards, too, collecting 6 rebounds.

Van-Far outscored Mark Twain 29-25 in the second half, capped off by a 19-point fourth quarter.

The Indians were 19-for-34 on 2-point attempts for 56 percent shooting. They hit 3-for-17 (18 percent) on 3-pointers, finishing with 43 percent field goal percentage for the night.

Connaway credited his team’s play on both sides of the ball.

“Defensively, we saw things that we haven’t been seeing all year,” Connaway said.

Mark Twain was hosting their courtwarming and brought an energized cheering section to the game, but the Indians kept their focus.

“It was a great team win,” Connaway said. “We have to really build off it and continue to get better.”

Hunter Scorgin had 10 points and 5 rebounds for Van-Far; Nikos Connaway added 9 points and 5 rebounds to the cause.

This week, Van-Far hosts three games: Wellsville-Middletown Tuesday, Louisiana Wednesday, and Silex Friday. They enter the week with a 6-12 record.
