The Eastern Missouri Family YMCA in Vandalia hosted their annual “Too Much Turkey” post Thanksgiving 5k walk/run. The event began along with the first snow of the season at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30.
This is the YMCA’s second year doing a post-thanksgiving turkey trot.
“The Saturday after just worked out better with everyone’s schedules,” says Branch Director Debbi Hopke.
Registration from Oct. 8 through Nov. 4 was $30 for a long sleeve t-shirt and $20 without a shirt. After Nov. 4, registration was $30 for all runners. Every year, a portion of the net proceeds are donated to the local Angel Tree program. Last year, the YMCA was able to give about $600 in donations.
This year’s event was a bit smaller but just as fun, especially in the snow. “Everyone seemed to enjoy it,” says Hopke. “We probably had about an inch of snow on the ground.”
The race saw eight runners of all ages from 12 to 75.
First place winners who had just run off their thanksgiving feast, received a 3-pound pumpkin pie.
