Filing opened this past Tuesday for candidates interested in running for open seats on the Mexico City Council and the Mexico Public Schools Board of Education (BOE) with some action on the first day.
Mexico Mayor Vicki Briggs didn’t waste much time deciding she would seek another term on the council. The Ledger was informed shortly after filing opened Briggs had filed. The position of mayor is more symbolic in Mexico’s form of government and the mayor is a council member.
There are two seats up for election on the council including Briggs’ seat. Councilman Chris Miller, who also has served as mayor, is also up for re-election. Miller told the Ledger before filing began that he was going to wait and see who filed for his seat before he would make a decision.
The Mexico Public Schools BOE has three open seats in next April’s election with two of the seats for three year terms and one seat that is a two-year term. The two-year term seat would finish the term of former BOE President Todd Yager who won election last year. Lennette Brown was appointed to fill the rest of Yager’s term this summer until the next election. Brown has filed to run for the seat in April.
Two people filed for the two open three-year terms. Michelle Stephens, who is the BOE’s current treasurer, has filed to run for election. Stephens was appointed to her current seat this past summer after an open occurred on the board. Stephens also ran in this past April’s election for the BOE.
Another candidate who ran in last April’s BOE election, Jennifer Gore, has also filed to run for a three-year term on the BOE.
Candidate filing remains open until the end of business on Tuesday, Dec. 26, both entities.
