A Mexico man led law enforcement officers on a wild car chase before being arrested and jailed on several charges.
Hayden Michael Sample, 26, ended the day on Jan. 11 in the Audrain County Jail booked for alleged possession of controlled substances, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and a number of other charges related to his attempt to avoid being detained by officers, including endangering the safety of a highway worker.
The incident began shortly after 1 p.m. when members of the East Central Drug Task Force, the Mexico Public Safety Department and the Audrain County Sheriff’s Office arrived at Sample’s home in the 800 block of North Western Street.
While attempting to serve a search warrant, officers noticed a red Dodge pickup truck parked at the location with its engine running. Moments later, the truck sped off, tearing across neighborhood lawns before reaching the street.
Audrain County deputies led the pursuit, chasing Sample down Maple Street and Jefferson Street in Mexico. Sample attempted to evade deputies by fleeing on rural routes and the pursuit continued — first along Audrain Road 353 then Audrain Road 332, Audrain Road 341 and Audrain Road 350.
Sample eventually turned onto Highway 15. When the chase reached the intersection of Audrain Road 355, Sample pulled to a stop and gave himself up to deputies. The entire affair lasted approximately 15 minutes.
Deputies searched the truck and allegedly found heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana, along with drug paraphernalia. These items were taken as evidence.
Sample was also charged with driving with a revoked license, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, using the license plate of another person and careless driving.
