The display is simply breathtaking and has been known to stop traffic on Highway 22. 568 flags including 28 KIA (killed in action) flags are on display in the Centralia Cemetery. The Centralia Avenue of Flags was brought to the Centralia Advisory Committee by committee member Jan Hollis in 2005.
Volunteers from several organizations including the local VFW Post 6276, Centralia R-6 Schools, Centralia FFA Chapter, Centralia Boys and Girls Scouts, 4-H Clubs, and area churches helped put up the flags up on Wednesday, November 9.
Phyliss Brown, Centralia Cemetery Sexton says "The entire community comes together and helps out. The Centralia Quilt Club meets at Abby's Quilt Shop once a month and decided to help repair the damaged flags. The group brings their sewing machines to the Community Room at the Centralia City Hall and recently repaired about 20 flags."
The flags are raised and lowered for Memorial Day Weekend, July 4th, and Veterans Day. Postcard notifications for the flag display schedule is mailed out about 2-4 weeks before the scheduled display time.
