Concerts in the Park back on schedule

Music and magic.

The two seem to flirt constantly. “Strange Magic,” “This Magic Moment,” “Blue Magic,” and the classic “Do You Believe in Magic” come readily to mind.

And if there’s something mystical in music, Brooke Jameson believes those powers can sway even the weather during Mexico’s Concerts in the Park series.

“Hardin Park has a magical way of being a cool 80 degrees, no matter the temperature,” she said.

The series, which was shortened by the pandemic in 2020, returns with a full schedule this summer. A performance is planned every Tuesday evening from June 1 through July 27. And although the first strum of a guitar or thump of a drum is weeks away, only two open dates remain on the schedule.

Jameson is the recreation director for the city’s Parks & Recreation Department. Last week she hosted interested local musicians in a planning session for the summer series.

It didn’t take long for the schedule to take shape.

The city commissions a Community Band under the direction of Josh Yancey. The band receives three of the concert dates, including the June 1 opener. The rest of the lineup includes the Mexico Bluegrass Group, the popular country band Silver Wings and Scott Weber, a one man act.

“He’s one of my favorites because he does something different every year,” Jameson said.

The concerts draw about 100 people to the park each Tuesday. Vans bring in music lovers from senior centers and the veterans home — or did before the pandemic — and the stage is occupied by local talent. The Reetz family, headed by well-known local artist David Reetz, closes out the series.

As for the two empty slots, Jameson says filling them will be easy.

No magic to it.
