Fire struck one of Mexico’s businesses Friday night.
On Friday, May 3, at approximately 11:13 p.m. the Mexico Public Safety Department (MPSD) responded to the 200 block of S. Jefferson Street in reference to heavy smoke in the area. Responding personnel determined the smoke was coming from one of the Crown Linen buildings located in the 100 block of W. Promenade. Personnel attempted to gain entry to locate and extinguish the fire but flame began burning through the roof. The fire was eventually extinguished with the involved building suffering serious fire damage and the attached buildings suffering light water and smoke damage.
The Mexico Street Department responded around 6 a.m. on Saturday and cleaned the sidewalks and streets around the building. The section of sidewalk nearest the building and part of the street were closed as Crown Linen moved equipment so they could continue operations.
An investigation determined that the fire started in an area where cloth items, often used to clean chemicals, were stored.
A public safety officer received minor injuries on scene. The officer was later examined by medical personnel and released from medical care.
Monday, Crown Linen was open for business as the clean-up continues.
