Hidden Hero “B” makes a positive impact on his community

There’s little doubt that The Mexico Ledger’s second-ever Hidden Hero is one of the most energetic residents in Audrain County - and beyond. That person is Brenan "B" Wilson, who was honored with his honorary cape in a Monday afternoon presentation at the Mexico Area Family YMCA. The Y is a special place for B, where he loves to work and make sure everyone gets their work done.

But the YMCA is just one of the places that benefit from his talents. With an infectious personality and work ethic, Brenan has endeared himself to the community and he gives back whenever he can.

“He’s always wanting to work,” said Tiger Rotenburger. Rotenburger, along with Brenan’s mom, Sam, were co-conspirators for organizing the surprise presentation.

And Brenan is detailed about tasks, making lists and wanting everyone to get on board with the program. Work takes on many forms, anything from leaf blowing around the house, to informing the public of what’s going on in and around Mexico. He does that through his Facebook account, telling people about events around town, and he’s coupled that with his downright robust Youtube channel, “Hot Bytes with Brenan.” Since he started it up, he’s gained over 450 subscribers, while posting 300 videos - and counting. Videos are created on his iPad and they can get some significant traction, with one racking up about 43,000 views so far. There are videos explaining how things work, how to make repairs, and some focus on his favorite things or people.

He also likes keeping his followers up to date when places like the Y or school are out for holidays or due to inclement weather.  Those efforts led to some direct recognition; as part of his school cancellation reporting, the Mexico School District made the 2021 graduate the honorary superintendent for the 2020-21 school year.

Among Brenan’s favorite things are all things UPS and has his bedroom walls painted in UPS yellow, and has even suggested to his mom that the house would look pretty spectacular in yellow siding. He’s a fan of lions of all shapes and sizes, riding his what you didn't tell me (tricycle bike) around the neighborhood, riding his go-kart at his grandparents’ house,  collecting business-themed shirts (his newest shirt is from ALDI), ice cold lemon pudding and his hot wedgie fries.

“You can always depend on B to bring a smile to your face with his joyful spirit and contagious smile and personality,” said one of Brenan’s many supporters. “If you are having a bad day just talk to B and he just has the ability to make it better.  After all he has been through in his life, he can show us all that no matter what, we can make the best of everyday.  We could all be more like B.”

The community agrees. Brenan’s name came up early and often as a nominee after The Ledger presented its first Hidden Hero award to Mark DeJaynes. The Mexico Ledger, in conjunction with its Hidden Heroes sponsors, congratulates Brenan on being a Hidden Hero. Anyone who would like to nominate the next Hidden Hero is encouraged to do so by contacting The Ledger, online or at the office.
