Leota Mae Baber, 89, formerly of Mexico, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021, at Evelyn’s Hospice House in Creve Coeur.

She was born in Calwood, on April 4, 1932 to the late William Everitt “W.E.” Austin and the late Pearl Leota (Chism) Austin.

Leota was married to Jesse B. Baber on Aug. 21, 1955. He preceded her in death on Nov. 2, 2020.

Leota taught for more than 40 years in the Fulton and Mexico school districts. Even after retiring from the public schools, she continued teaching preschool at the YMCA in Mexico. A woman of great faith, she was an active member of Mexico United Methodist Church. In her spare time, she enjoyed quilting and sewing and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

She will be sadly missed by son, Gregory Baber (Sandra) of Lake St. Louis; daughter, Rebecca E. Glovanovitz (Kent) of Fenton; sisters-in-law, Joyce Austin and Brenda Austin; and grandchildren, Amanda Baber, Matthew Baber (Monica), and Evan Glovanovitz.  

In addition to her husband and parents, Leota was preceded in death by brothers, Gene Austin, Clay Austin, Leland Austin, and John Austin; sister, Joan Gowin; and sister-in-law, Helen Austin.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Maupin Funeral Home in Fulton with Pastor Bruce Williamson officiating. Friends will be received from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Callaway Memorial Gardens.
