Hometown daughter, Dr. Bronwyn MacFarlane, has a new book release, “Social and Emotional Learning for Advanced Children in Early Childhood: Birth to 8,” published by Routledge, and it is hot off the press for 2023.

The new book focuses on the complexities of social and emotional learning (SEL) during early childhood with specific guidance about supporting advanced children’s social skills, relationship development, and positive mental health. Affective development is the area of a child’s growth that includes personality, emotions, making and changing friends, social skills, and a child’s self-perception. Affective, cognitive, and physical development are all critical parts of overall childhood development and wellness.

“It is my hope that this book will provide readers with ideas that may be useful daily for gentle parenting and teaching,” said Dr. MacFarlane.

The SEL book is co-authored by MacFarlane and Ellen Honeck, Ph.D., and together the two educators developed cases studies for each age level as well as chapter discussion questions for readers to consider. They also wanted to include appropriate early childhood resources in the areas of identification, differentiated curriculum, and organizational supports for addressing social and emotional learning needs among advanced children for interested readers.

Hailing from a long line of local educators in her family, MacFarlane is an award-winning professor who has taught at both K-12 and higher education levels. She currently teaches doctoral courses in leadership theories, advanced statistics, educational policies and law, and chairs over 40 doctoral dissertation research committees. With dual specialties in both K-12 administration and gifted education program administration, this is her fifth book and she is working on the manuscript of a sixth book that will be a second edition of her 2016 book about delivering STEM education programming for advanced learners.

MacFarlane said, “The release of this early childhood SEL book is exciting as it is reader-friendly and provides translational research with practical application for everyday use by busy educators and parents teaching young children at home, in early childhood settings, and in elementary schools. This book merges understandings about psychosocial development among very young children to support an advanced child’s growth and talent development.”

An international speaker, MacFarlane will be speaking next about the ideas within her new SEL book as part of the speaker line-up for the 2023 Baylor University 4th Annual Parent Conference, sponsored by the Baylor Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development. More information about the new SEL book may be found on the publisher’s website as well as Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
