McCoy’s versatile play leads Centralia to 44-8 conference win at Clark County

Elliott McCoy can score in a variety of ways for Centralia.

The junior ran, caught and passed for a touchdown as the Panthers won 44-8 at Clarence Cannon Conference foe Clark County, extending their winning streak in the rivalry to 13 games.

Head coach Tyler Forsee said McCoy returned an interception for about 60 yards that almost went for a touchdown so his versatility shined.

“He’s pretty quick and can run the football pretty well,” Forsee said. “He has good hands as he played receiver last year for us and caught a couple touchdowns last year. He’s just a good athlete and has a really good arm.”

McCoy’s varied skillset allows Forsee to be creative with his playcalling, including using him on passing plays that look like runs initially. Centralia’s first touchdown was on McCoy’s touchdown pass to Logan Rosenfelder that went for 31 yards. Forsee said he’s most impressed with McCoy’s blocking ability despite his smaller size.

Centralia had a varied game as a team, Forsee said, as the offense was balanced with Charlie Robinson (seven carries for 64 yards), Ethan Ross (three carries for 72 yards) and Rex Bryson each running for a touchdown and unit totaling 429 yards. The defense allowed only about five first downs and 84 yards by Clark County – led by five tackles each from Louis Suddarth and Henry Bohlmeyer – and the special teams unit led by kicker Adam Rhoades played a key role.

“Our kickoff unit did a good job with kickoff coverage,” Forsee said. “If you get the ball downfield, our coverage can go down and make a play to limit their returns.”

Centralia expects another “dog fight” in a matchup between Panthers at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Clarence Cannon Conference foe Monroe City (1-2). Centralia won the meeting last season 27-24.

“It’s tough to get them off the field because they’re a good four-down offense,” Forsee said. “Their backs do a good job of hitting the hole fast. They return a lot of guys from last year.”
