Mexico Area Family YMCA held a ribbon cutting for the grand opening of their new playground on Thursday, May 9, prior to their Annual Support Luncheon.  Board Members, YMCA staff and community members were there to see the impressive new playground demonstrated by  children from the Southside Christian Academy.

Childcare programs at the Y focus on fostering positive youth development for kids of all ages.  This Playground design features play opportunities for all users by meeting ADA standards, utilizing industry best practices for safety surfacing and featuring inclusive elements such as an adaptable swing, sensory play and a shaded seating area. A safe playspace that is walkable during inclement weather and sheltered from outside influences is a major benefit.  The location is close in proximity, enclosed with fencing, anti-microbial paint and boats trauma-reducing safety surfacing that is each to maintain.

Brooke Oliver, director, offered a big thank you to all involved.  Special thank yous to all the donors.  Missouri Solid Waste Management, Rual Morris Charitable Foundation, Edmonston Foundation, AP Green Foundation, Bill & Jill McCaw Family, Jack & Mary Creason, Griffin Foundation, Veterans United Foundation, Stribling Foundation, Vandiver Village, Anne Johnson, Dr. Peggy Barjenbruch, Ameren UE, Mosers, Donaldson Excavation, Don & Nancy Decker, Alan & Susan Atkins, McDonald Stone Co, Robert Fenlon, Jim & Judy Dye, Gamma Lambda Beta Sigma Phi, Bruce & Nance Oliver, Sterling & Pam Oliver, Carol Gallaher, Steve & Laura Erdel and Hutchinson Recreation.

The project was completed on time and on budget.  The total cost was $210,677.79.  A fun fact Brooke offered was that the surface was made from scrap tires and in the process saved 18 tons of waste from going into landfills.

The playground is free for members to check-out.   First come, first serve.  Go to the front desk and check out the playground key for up to 25 children.  The playground may also be rented for your next event for $65  per hour.  Minimum age to rent is 18.
