Mexico can’t match better second half in 38-14 road loss to Odessa

The first half put Mexico in too much of a hole on Friday night.

The Bulldogs lost 38-14 at the Odessa Bulldogs after falling behind 24-0 at halftime. Mexico scored twice in the second half on rushing touchdowns by Drew DeMint, who had 65 yards on 15 carries, and Korbyn Dorsey, who led the team with 115 yards on 15 carries.

Head coach Steve Haag said the offense wasn’t clicking early, and Odessa (2-1) was “on the field quite a bit” as a result. There was some improvement in the second half, but it was too late.

“If we could’ve played in the first half like we did the second half, we would’ve probably at least made it a game,” Haag said. “We settled down a little bit, we were a little more physical in the second half, and we threw the ball better.”

Haag said Mexico (1-2) completing five of its six overall passes in the second half helped open up offense. DeMint caught four passes for 38 yards, and Dorsey had two receptions for 22 yards. The Bulldogs just need to be smoother when possessing the ball.

“Being able to hold on to the football and being able to move the chains is something we didn’t do in the first half,” Haag said.

Odessa does well keeping teams off-balance with its offense and took advantage of a couple long passes against Mexico, totaling 270 passing yards for the game. There was one in the second half that led to a score on a drive, but Haag said the one in the first half hurt the most as it was 19 seconds before halftime and it set up a score to make it 24-0 Odessa through two quarters.

Haag said Mexico had to be able to answer that with its offense and will need to be better early in games against the North Central Missouri Conference. The Bulldogs open their conference schedule at 7 p.m. Friday against Marshall (0-3), which is also the Homecoming game.

“I’m more disappointed in the little things that hurt tonight as I wasn’t disappointed in our effort,” Haag said. “We played hard and moved the football, which is good, but we need to be able to start off that way. We’re a good enough football team where we should be able to get some first downs.”
