The Mexico Parks and Recreation Department has filled the position of recreation supervisor and he’s already deep into the job.
Tyler Huffman was introduced to the Mexico Parks and Recreation Board of Advisors last week. Parks and Recreation director Chad Shoemaker said it’s been a lot to take in for Huffman in his first week.
“He’s only been with us a week and a half so he’s been drinking out of a fire hose,” Shoemaker said jokingly about Huffman’s experience. “He’s figuring out a lot fast.”
Huffman confirmed Shoemaker’s assertion.
“It’s a lot of stuff to learn for sure,” Huffman said.
Huffman has a degree in sports management; played baseball in college, and has experience with maintenance and fitness. Huffman said currently getting the pool ready for summer, networking, and making contacts for concerts in the parks are the things he’s been working on the most so far. Huffman replaces Seth Cooke who moved over to the Mexico YMCA to take over their programs director position.
“He brings a lot to the table so hopefully you’ll give him the same great opportunities you gave Seth,” Shoemaker said.
Huffman was born and raised in Illinois but moved to Columbia about four years ago and had visited Mexico before applying for the position. Huffman said he was looking for a job like this because it fits his style.
“One of my favorite things is to be outside,” Huffman said. “I enjoy parks and I disc golf occasionally.”
In today’s day and age, many folks are content to stay inside doing hobbies are playing video games. Huffman said he wants to reverse that trend in Mexico.
“Being able to entice people to go outside with events we put on and stuff like that I’m looking forward to for sure,” Huffman said.
