One person shot in neighbor dispute

On Sunday, Nov. 19, at approximately 4:33 p.m., the Mexico Public Safety Department (MPSD) responded to the 200 block of South Alabama in reference to a disturbance and shooting. Responding officers found that several people from two different houses in that area had been arguing and that escalated into a physical fight. During the fight, Kyle C Parrish, age 37 of Mexico, produced a gun and shot a 38-year-old Mexico man in the leg. The man who was shot was taken to University Hospital by Audrain Ambulance District. He was admitted for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Parrish was taken into custody by MPSD and eventually taken to the Audrain County Jail for Assault second degree, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Residents are reminded that people arrested or charged with a crime are simply accused of the crime and are to be considered innocent until proven guilty.

MPSD diffuses domestic incident

On Tuesday, Nov. 21, at approximately 6:36 p.m., the Mexico Public Safety Department (MPSD) responded to the 900 block of Vance Road in reference to someone being held against their will. Responding officers located Kevin D Benton, age 31 of Mexico, and a 25-year-old woman in the area. Investigation indicated Benton told a third party he was going to kidnap the woman. He then grabbed her, covered her mouth, and attempted to get her to leave with him prior to the officer arrival. Benton was arrested and processed at MPSD then taken to the Audrain County Jail for kidnapping second-degree, domestic assault fourth-degree, and armed criminal action. The woman was not injured and there was no indication Benton was a threat to anyone else. Residents are reminded that people arrested or charged with a crime are simply accused of that crime and are to be considered innocent until proven guilty.

MPSD responds to grass fire

On Friday, Nov. 17, at approximately 12:39 p.m., the Mexico Public Safety Department (MPSD) responded to the 1200 block of Vance Road after a passerby saw a small fire in a field that contained numerous straw and hay bales. The fire was extinguished before reaching any of the bales. The fire apparently started after a failure in some electric equipment on an overhead utility pole. Ameren responded to the scene to correct the issue. There were no injuries from the incident.
