Perry Women's Club hears update on potential hospital in Audrain County

Posted

Special guest speaker Donna Corrado engaged the Perry women's club at The Junction Restaurant in Perry on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. The topic was Audrain County and their former hospital.

The facility was shuttered by Noble Health Corporation on March 23, 2022. It currently has its fifth owner since belonging to the county in 2013. Donna Corrado, an active RN, and her husband, Dr. Joseph Corrado have been solicited for their advice by the newest owners, Pasture Medical Group, LLC.

Donna Corrado says they have been involved two times in zoom meetings with the new owners and are anticipating a third session. "Pasture owns Fulton Hospital as well, which they have put into bankruptcy proceedings, and are planning the same for Audrain. The current facility is no longer licensed as a hospital and will lose its certificate of need in April", said Corrado.

At the start of decrease in services by SSM Saint Mary's, Mrs. Corrado commissioned an analysis of the healthcare market in our area. Corrado says it revealed more than adequate numbers to sustain a critical access hospital.

"In October, 2022, I hired a project manager and began using that analysis and the local physicians as guides to create a conceptual plan for a critical access hospital. We have plans, a proposed site, which was donated by Eddie Sydenstricker, and the original intent and mission statement created by the group of doctors who remain loyal to the area and want to see sustainable health care in the form of a critical access hospital in the area again."

Corrado said the group is currently looking into fundraising, that committee or point person will be announced and will be announced if the current owners of the facility fail to show any progress in the upcoming couple of weeks. "I intend to hold their feet to the fire, and refuse to fall for lip service again", said Mrs. Corrado.

It was announced at the beginning of March that the Audrain County Commission, the City of Mexico, and the Audrain County Health Department have started the process to conduct a healthcare feasibility study. According to Audrain County Presiding Commissioner Alan Winders they will be entering contract negotiations soon and they have received proposals from several firms.
