Plenty of ‘Loaf’ing in Auxvasse

A long-standing tradition was renewed Aug. 9-14 as Loafer’s Week returned to Auxvasse for its 60th anniversary.

Loafers Week began as a one-day event 60 years ago at the grain elevator and has grown to a week-long celebration, with card games, dominos and other board games part of the fun. Free coffee, iced tea and popcorn was available all week for everyone that attended.

Happenings took place at the new Auxvasse Community Center at 702 South Main Street in Auxvasse. A meal was served each day by a local organization. On Monday, the Knipp family served a baked spaghetti dinner, Tuesday was The Callaway Bank serving fried chicken, Wednesday, the Sons of Confederate Veterans with a potato bar, Thursday, the Auxvasse Community Center served turkey and dressing and Friday was the Lions Club holding a fish fry dinner. On Saturday, the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church served a pork steak meal ending the week-long celebration.

The Callaway Bank team served Tuesday. The bank has been committed to Auxvasse Loafer’s Week for decades - likely since it was created 60 years ago. For the past five years or so, The Callaway Bank has served fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy and all the trimmings which is a fave of all Callawegians.
