Three men linked to a series of auto thefts in Mexico were arrested by police in Carrollton, Ill., on Friday.
Corvis D. Johnson, 35, of Belridge, Quindarion L. Wright, 20, of St. Louis and Jamie M. Dwyer, 22, of St. Charles were nabbed by officers in the early morning as they allegedly were in the act of stealing a car in Carrollton.
A fourth suspect reportedly eluded police.
Investigators believe the three -- as well as the person who got away -- are part of an apparent auto theft operation that swept through Mexico twice in a three-month span, stealing six vehicles in all.
Ten days ago three vehicles were stolen during the overnight hours, police reported. One of these was being used by the suspects in Carrollton. A second car stolen that night was located in St. Louis on Thursday, where it had been abandoned.
Mexico Public Safety Department officers report that the incident earlier this month is similar to one that occured in November, when three vehicles were also taken in a single night.
Investigators say that on the night of Nov. 9-10, four individuals in a white SUV arrived in Mexico and began searching for unlocked cars. They took items from some vehicles. The three they stole were believed to have been driven to the St. Louis area.
On Sunday, Jan. 17, MPSD officers were informed that cars had been stolen from three locations. One was parked on the 700 block of Quisenberry Street, another on the 900 block of Lakeview and the third was located in the 1500 block of Ringo.
Police report that at least two of these vehicles were left unlocked with the keys inside.
MPSD investigators believe the same people are responsible for this second round of thefts. They suspect the individuals involved are part of a larger ring operating in the St. Louis area.
In October, four teens were arrested in Manchester, accused of auto thefts dating back to May. In November, police in Bowling Green and three counties in Illinois received reports of thefts.
At the end of December, there were reports of three subjects checking car door handles in the early morning hours in Clayton and Richmond Heights.
MPSD is working with other law enforcement agencies to determine charges to file in Audrain County.
