For the second month in a row, the Van-Far School Board debated a motion to do away with the district mask mandate. For the second month in a row, the motion was defeated.
Board member Tony Dameron made a motion to discontinue the mask mandate for the district. The motion was seconded by Kevin Motley. But Superintendent John Fortney was quick to defend the mandate.
“By nature, my job is to be overly cautious,” Fortney said. “I would leave it in place.”
On this occasion the debate was not as lengthy. The issues had been well covered at the last meeting.
Following a short discussion, the board voted 5-2, with the motion failing. The mask mandate will stay in place until the end of the school year.
Before this decision, recently elected members were sworn in and the positions reorganized.
Dameron and Pete Nasir were sworn in to new terms. Following that, officers were elected, with Justin Hopke voted in as president and Dameron named vice president.
Stacia Wilson took the post of secretary. Bryan Evans was selected as treasurer. Nasir will serve as the MSBA Delegate and Motley the MSBA alternate.
