The Van-Far boys are hot going into their district game on Thursday.
The Indians already had the top seed in the Class 1 District 5 tournament, earning them a first-round bye to their 5:30 p.m. Thursday game at Clopton, but capped their first 20-win season in four years with a 47-37 victory at Wright City on Feb. 12 and a 60-40 win at home against Bowling Green on Saturday. The last time Van-Far (21-5, 9-1 EMO) won 20 games was 22 in the 2019-20 season.
Van-Far didn’t start well against Bowling Green (8-17, 5-5 EMO), allowing the first 14 points of the game but bounced back to narrow its deficit to 23-21 at halftime. The Indians forced 20 turnovers for 15 points and were led by Nikos Connaway’s 15 points, nine assists and seven steals. Pacey Reading followed with 13 points and hit the 3-pointer that opened the second half to give Van-Far the lead, and Carson Huff had nine points, and Carter Jennings finished with eight points and nine rebounds.
The Indians started better at Wright City (11-12, 5-5 EMO), leading 11-4 after the first quarter and maintaining an 8-10 lead for most of the game. Jennings led with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, Huff followed with nine points, Connaway had nine points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Gage Gibson finished with eight points and four assists.
The Lady Indians won three of their last four games this season, defeating Wright City 48-36, Columbia Independent 60-10 and Bowling Green 52-45. Van-Far finishes the regular season at 4-18 and 2-8 in the Eastern Missouri Conference.
