The South School Park baseball fields are not in the best of shape.
According to Vandalia Ball Association’s Ramsey Dickerman, rain turns both fields into muddy quagmire’s for days after a rain. Summer league teams often have to postpone or cancel games.
At their most recent meeting, the Vandalia Board of Aldermen voted to fix the problem after city administrator Darren Berry explained the various options.
The city had received a bid of $26,134 to upgrade both fields simultaneously. Berry noted that both fields require drainage work, which amounts to several related projects.
To solve the issues involves the addition of sand and infield soil, tilling and raking, rolling for compaction, laser grading, top dressing, resetting bases and pitching rubber and sodding the infield arc.
Dickerman noted that summer ball helps keep kids active and involved, but that the association does not have the funds to make the necessary improvements.
Berry gave the option of working on the fields one at a time. Each project would cost around $15,000. But he also said money to accomplish both was available if the board voted to release it from the Jordan-Waters Fund.
The board unanimously voted to repair both fields and to use the Jordan-Waters Fund to do so.
