YMCA announces plans for physical therapy expansion

Energy company donates big check to YMCA

A renewable energy company, EDF Renewables, has donated a sizable amount of money to the local YMCA for an expansion project.

Officials with the company were at the Mexico YMCA last week to present a check for $30,000 for an expansion project The Y is currently working on. The project would expand its current physical therapy operations by 3,000 square feet.

The company is currently constructing a solar project near Vandalia that is set to come online in about a year. A spokesperson for the company, Stephanie Miller, said the project will last about 30 years.

“We want to be good stewards of the communities where we are developing our projects through the life span of the project,” Miller told YMCA board members. “It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. We’re not going anywhere anytime soon and we look for opportunities to work with organizations that are foundational to the community.”

The company is also partnering with Blattner Energy to provide a toy donation to Pops Playground Childcare in Vandalia.

“That’s the beginning of our work here,” Miller said.

YMCA Director Brooke Oliver said she was impressed when speaking with Miller and she even suggested some other organizations in the community they should reach out to.

“It’s just an honor that they selected The Y as the benefit of some of their philanthropic goals,” Oliver told board members.

Oliver said if the project hits a snag they have a contingency plan in place. The money would be used to upgrade and add safety enhancements to the locker rooms.
