Brett Workes did not set out to be an IT geek. Technical coordinator for Audrain Developmental Disability Services for the past five years, she previously served as assistant manager for Orscheln Farm & Home in Mexico. Born in Columbia, Workes grew up in Mexico and graduated from Mexico High School in 2008. She honed her technology skills at Moberly Area Community College.

1. What does a technical coordinator do?

I just fix broken computers, deal with internet issues, install software, answer questions.

2. Why is technology so frustrating?

It's really just because it's always changing and people tend not to understand how it all works.

3. And techies can't explain it to us in normal language.

Yeah, we're just weirdos. We get excited about new equipment and new programs.

4. What drew you to IT?

I've always liked computers and playing around with new software. I wasn't originally hired to do this job, but they knew I was good with the technology side. So really I fell into it.

5. What were you hired as?

Administrative assistant.

6. How important is IT to the organization?

It's extremely important. We use IT for everything. We are constantly looking for ways to go from paper to the cloud, to use less paper.

7. That was always the promise of computers, but for a long time technology created more paper use.

It really did. And we have so many huge files. Eventually they will be switched over. Going cloud-based helps eliminate some risk. We always have a back up.

8. Do you get on your computer at home?

No, when I get home I get on dinner, laundry – normal mom stuff.

9. So you don't play games?

I don't play video or computer or any games. Actually, I don't have a lot of time to sit down and play. I'm on my feet more at home than at work.

10. Sounds like you don't get any spare time.

If I have spare time, I like to get the kids out of the house.
