Dana Keller continues the Super 7 series as we get to know the woman behind the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce just a little better.

The Executive Director has made her mark in Mexico plenty over the years and she also likes her fair share of hobbies and hopes for a better world.

She’s also a bit of a romantic.

How long have you worked in your current position? In Mexico? What do you like about your current job?

“I started at the chamber in March of 2009. I moved to Mexico in August 1986. I love having the platform to help build and encourage a positive community culture and the opportunity to support the business community.

What is your history in Mexico? What do you like about it?

“It’s the age ol’ story, it began with a man. He won me over first, but the community soon followed. We are relatively small, but we are oh so mighty. When we work together there isn’t much we can’t accomplish.”

As the leader of the Chamber, what would you like to see happen in the next 5 years in terms of growth?

“Workforce, workforce, workforce. We have to continue to work towards a larger, more qualified workforce. I would also like community support for education to continue to grow, in today’s world we can’t expect our schools to do it alone.

“Finally, having a hospital in Mexico is a matter of life and death in many situations, as a chamber we will never stop working towards supporting a local hospital.”

When you aren’t working, what are your favorite hobbies and why?

“Soaking up the sun, doing creative things but all of that is trumped by spending time with my family. My biological family is pretty small, but I have tossed a whole lot of chosen family into the mix.”

If you had to choose only two meals you could eat on a deserted island for a whole month what would they be and why?

“Hands down, surf and turf - I love lobster and a good steak. If that counts as one meal, the other would be fresh Mexican food.”

Where is your dream vacation and why? Have you been before?

“If Alabama is north, I am good to go. I am a warm weather, beach girl. I have been to lots of beaches…. south, east, west and out of the country, as long as it is warm, I am down for it.”

If there is one issue in today’s world you would like to change, what would it be and why and how?

“More supports for children. There are so many kids lacking the parental support and mentors that my kids grew up with. As a community, we will never be any healthier than the kids we are raising. It is not enough to just raise your children, we need to be a strong voice for all kids, as I said above, the schools can’t be expected to do it alone.

“As a community we are constantly working on that through things such a Bright Futures but we can never stop trying to improve the job we are doing to ensure every child has a future story of success.”
