Missouri Military Academy, in partnership with co-sponsors Missouri University of Science and Technology and Project Lead The Way, will host a day of STEM education and exploration on Oct. 20, culminating in a free STEM Night for area students and families from 4 to 6 p.m.
The day will bring together educators, STEM professionals, community organizations, MMA cadets and area families to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics through professional learning, classroom experiences, demonstrations and hands-on activities.
The morning will begin with a session for superintendents, principals and STEM teachers from across northeast Missouri. Michael Corcoran, assistant director of computer science at the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, will serve as keynote speaker, providing insight into DESE policy concerning the use of artificial intelligence in the classroom.
In the afternoon, visiting educators will have opportunities to observe classes, tour the MMA campus and see science demonstrations presented by cadets from multiple STEM classes, including, but not limited to, Application Creators, Cyber-Security, Physical Science, and Robotics. From 2 to 4 p.m., MMA cadets will participate in hands-on STEM activities offered by participating organizations and vendors.
At 4 p.m., the event will open to the public for STEM Night at MMA. Area students and families are invited to participate in interactive activities, demonstrations, engineering challenges and experiments designed to bring STEM to life and introduce young people to real-world applications of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
MMA’s emphasis on STEM education extends throughout its academic and leadership programs. As a Project Lead The Way school, MMA provides cadets with hands-on, project-based STEM learning opportunities. The Academy was also among a select group of schools nationwide chosen to participate in the U.S. Army JROTC Cybersecurity Pilot Program. Through MMA’s JROTC Cyber Program, cadets develop skills in cybersecurity, coding and information technology while gaining opportunities to earn industry-recognized IT certifications.
STEM Night at MMA will be held Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Missouri Military Academy Gymtorium, 204 N. Grand St., Mexico, Missouri. The event is free and open to the public.
