The Community Health Ministry Team held its 16th annual Back-to-School Health Fair at the Mexico United Methodist Church Saturday. The weather and turn-out were good, and 398 bags of school supplies were handed out. Over these past many years, about 6,500 kids have participated in this event, receiving many different goods and services.
This year’s event was different from prior years’ “drive-by” events that were put into place because of the Covid-19 pandemic. In collaboration with CHMT’s partner, the Audrain Public Health Department, which gave out backpacks, students and their families parked and entered the Mexico United Methodist Church, where they signed-in and they went to various stations to receive optional health screenings, school supplies, and info on this to get a free pair of tennis shoes.
CHMT members and other groups and volunteers handed out the school supplies, based on the school grade the children were going to be starting this fall. The Arthur Center was also in attendance and provided a dentist for those students whose parents wanted a quick dental screening for their child. They also partnered with Kid-Sight for vision screenings. The University of Missouri Extension office was in attendance and offered hearing screenings. “Shoes from the Heart” from Macon provided instructions on how the kids could receive a new pair of tennis shoes after the school year opens.
Organizers said they had a wonderful turnout of community volunteers (about 80 individuals in total) that helped make this event a success once again and their appreciation goes out to each of them, without whom they could not do this.
Organizers also thank the following sponsors: the Mexico United Methodist Church, Audrain County Health Department, The Arthur Center, Shoes from The Heart, Mexico Public Safety, The Audrain County Sheriff's Department, KXEO/KWWR Radio, The Mexico Ledger, C2C, Veterans United Credit Union, Healthy Blue, POET Industries, The Mexico Noon Lions, Mexico Public Schools, Oasis Tutoring, The Audrain Ambulance District and CMCA.
Special thanks go to The Anna Margaret Griffin Family Foundation, whose continued support made this event's success possible.
