In the Mexico High School sports complex, home of the Gary Filbert Court, this Mexico High School team hosted their annual trivia night Friday.
The Mexico High School Academic Team raised money for their upcoming national tournaments with a nacho bar, bake sale, silent auction and spirited trivia competition.
This year, the Academic Team set a goal of raising $5,000 at Trivia Night. They came in just short at $4,613.
“We have already made over $5,000 in fundraising this year and the season goal was $10,000,” said Dale Schenewerk, head coach of the MHS Academic Team.
Schenewerk said that while this was less than they aggressively shot for, they made more than last year with six fewer teams participating. He also said that those who showed up were supportive and generous.
This year had 12 total teams competing in 10 rounds of 10 questions each. The questions were written by the team members and Coach Schenewerk.
The team, ranked no. 4 in the nation, recently celebrated its 700th win with Schenewerk coaching.
The team has qualified for both the 2025 National Academic Quiz Tournament in Atlanta as well as the Partnership in Academic Competition Excellence National Scholastic Tournament in Chicago.
