Altrusa International of Mexico, Missouri, Inc. met on Aug. 27, at noon at The Oaks for their program meeting. The meeting was called to order by Copresident Tricia Jackson followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 26 members in attendance along with one guest.
Communications reported that the annual yearbook was completed and Tricia Jackson had them printed and were handed out at the meeting. ASTRA members will be assisting the United Way for the Power of the Purse fundraiser. SID day at Mexico High School is Sept. 11. Current members will host a booth with donuts for anyone interested in joining ASTRA. Literacy has several events planned to pass out books along with our dictionary delivery. Community Service discussed options for spending their budget and asked member to give input for an international project and for additional organizations that could be added to the list. Rhonda Vitale has offered her home to host our annual Christmas Party. Finance, Ways and Means has decided on two fundraisers. The first is poinsettia sales starting September 10. They will cost $20 and the delivery date is December 5. The second fundraiser will be Bingo on February 27 at the Mexico VFW.
In old business, Altrusa of Mexico hosted a district workshop on August 27 with approximately 20 people in attendance. Attendees brought underwear and socks to donate to Bright Futures of Mexico.
Heather Hobbs brought to the Club’s attention a need for pre-packaged, single-serving food to supplement the Buddy Backpack program at McMillan school. Anyone interested in donating can give to her or take directly to the school.
Carla Tanzey invited Ed Hoover, Chief Juvenile Officer with the 12th Circuit Juvenile Office. As Chief Juvenile Officer, he covers three counties – Audrain, Montgomery, and Warren – and provides supervision and discipline for children ages birth to 17. The office assists social services agencies, law enforcement, schools and the general public in dealing with child abuse and neglect, termination of parental rights, delinquency and status offenses by children. Some of their tasks include investigations, counseling, referrals, probation services and court work. Altrusa donates money each year and he says the money goes to helping the kids get things they need.
Members gave Happy Moments and recited the benediction to close the meeting.
