Altrusa International of Mexico, Missouri, Inc. met Jan. 22 at The Oaks for their program meeting. The meeting was called to order by Co-President Gina Raines followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. There were twenty members in attendance along with one guest.

Committee reports were as follows: ASTRA will be doing Valentine’s cards for the residents of King’s Daughters Home. They will also be working on Senior Spotlights and working on dates to visit eighth graders at Mexico Middle School and St. Brendan’s about becoming members next year. Membership will be initiating a new member at the next meeting. Scholarship information has been sent to the schools. Special Events planned a fun night out at Color Me Bleu. Hospitality is planning the annual Birthday Party in March at Gina Raines’ home. Foundation announced we received an unexpected grant from the Bill & Louise Hess Foundation. Member Sharon Sharp’s son submitted us for this grant.

Susan Paden introduced Gary Moreau, executive director of Mobility Worldwide in Columbia. This is Altrusa’s International Project.

Currently, there are 80 million people in the world with some sort of need for mobility access. Mel West saw this need and in the year 2000 Mobility Worldwide was formed in Columbia. Mobility Worldwide builds chain-driven mobility carts that are made from wood and have hand cranks. The carts cost $425 to manufacture.

To date, volunteers have built over 30,000 carts. These carts have been shipped to 106 countries and it takes 5 to 6 weeks for the container of goods to arrive. Africa has started manufacturing these carts.

Mobility Worldwide is collecting donations of used milk jugs and vegetable cans that will be used in the packing process of the carts as well as when they arrive at their destination — the milk cartons are used to haul water and the cans for plant starters. Moreau invites anyone to stop by for a tour and reminds everyone that they are looking for volunteers.

Members gave Happy Moments and recited the benediction to close the meeting.
