MPSD contacted a 73-year-old male from Mexico who shot himself as officers began to speak with him. There were no other injuries from the incident.
MPSD responds to car fire
On Sunday, August 20, at approximately 8:53 p.m., the Mexico Public Safety Department (MPSD) responded to the 4800 block of S Clark in reference to a vehicle fire. Responding personnel found a 2014 Nissan sedan with flame coming from the passenger compartment. The fire was extinguished but not before the passenger compartment and the numerous items packed inside were destroyed. The owner of the vehicle, a 52-year-old female from Auxvasse, could not give much information about what occurred prior to the fire. She requested Audrain Ambulance District transport her to University Hospital, but she had no visible injuries. The vehicle was later towed from the scene.
Youth detained after car theft investigation
On Thursday, August 17, at about 3:26 a.m., an alert resident notified the Mexico Public Safety Department (MPSD) about some suspicious activity in the northwest part of town. By around 4:06 a.m., officers learned of numerous vehicles that had been rummaged through in the north part of Mexico. Items had been stolen from some of the vehicles and in one instance, the vehicle itself had been stolen and abandoned about 10 blocks away. Beginning around 12:20 p.m., five juvenile males, ages 12-16, were located and detained for their roles in the various incidents. Two of the juveniles were taken into custody by the 12th Circuit Court-Juvenile Division and Division of Youth Services. The others were released to their guardians for follow up with the Juvenile Office.
