A Mexico man was arrested in Paris Monday after leading deputies on a vehicular pursuit.
On Monday at approximately 7 p.m., an Audrain County Sheriff’s Deputy was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Muldrow and Monroe Streets in Mexico when a motorcycle passed the deputy’s fully marked patrol vehicle and proceeded through the red light, a news release from the Audrain County Sheriff’s Office stated.
The motorcycle, driven by 19-year-old Stephen Elijah Wieberg of Mexico, matched the description of one that had been reported stolen earlier that day in Ralls County and was believed to be in the Mexico area.
The deputy attempted to stop the motorcycle, at which time Wieberg accelerated and fled northbound on Highway 15 from Mexico.
According to the release, the pursuit continued along Highway 15 into Monroe County ending in Paris after Wieberg failed to negotiate a turn and crashed. He then attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by members of the Monroe County and Audrain County Sheriff’s Offices.
Wieberg was arrested and transported to the Audrain County Jail pending the formal filing of charges by the Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
