In one week, Kayte Hass will be trading in her crown for a Marine Combat Utility Uniform.
Haas, who graduated this year from Centralia High School and is the daughter of Russ and Charles of Centralia, was named Audrain Youth Fair Queen Friday night. It was a well-deserved farewell to her home and lifelong commitment to agriculture before she embarks on her new journey as a Marine Corps Recruit at Camp Pendleton.
When she was 6 years old, Hass began showing horses. In high school, she was a dedicated member of the Audrain County F&L Hustlers 4-H Club and a Centralia FFA chapter officer.
“I started from a really young age because my brother is five years older than me and I live on a farm,” Hass said.
During her time in FFA, Hass has had a number of supervised agriculture experiences. She started out mowing her church’s lawn and cemetery before transitioning to raising bottle calves.
“I did four rounds of two bottle calves and then I got bee hives,” Hass said. “I have three bee hives that I am still continuing to do now and then working with my horse was my own little SAE.”
And if that wasn’t enough, Hass’s other SAE was her job as a nanny.
She got her start in youth fairs decorating cakes and participating in other small projects six years ago.
“I’ve loved it and wanted to be involved with it ever since,” Hass said.
She was crowned alongside Audrain County Youth Fair King Marshall Kable, son of Beth and Jason of Centralia.
Kable is a senior at Centralia High School. He serves on the Centralia FFA officer team and his SAEs are cattle and grain production.
“I show cattle and those heifers that I buy for that I then turn them out to pasture with them bred so they can have calves," Kable said. “Hopefully grow my cattle herd so I can soon start raising show cattle.”
Kable isn’t just a participant at the Audrain County Youth Fair. He is a volunteer who helped the fair board orchestrate family day and made sure the many events ran smoothly.
“Don’t be afraid to get involved,” Kable said. “It’s fun, (and) even if it doesn’t seem like it, it will eventually pay off.”
Next year, he plans to go to college. While he hasn’t yet decided where he will go, he said the goal is to come back home after school to work on his family farm.
Hass had the opportunity to show her horse one last time before she left for California at Monday night’s show.
Kable continued to help with the rest of the shows throughout the week and returned Tuesday to sell his steer.
