Auxvasse celebrating 66 years of loafing

Loafer’s week is almost here. The 66th Annual Loafer’s Week in Auxvasse will be held Oct. 12-17 at the Auxvasse Community Center, located at 702 South Main Street. Doors open at 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday.

Loafer’s Week began as a one-day event 66 years ago at the grain elevator. This event has grown into a week-long celebration. Card games, dominos and other board games are part of the fun each day. Free coffee, iced tea and peanuts will be available all week for everyone attending.

A noon meal will be served each day by a different organization. Serving time will begin at 11 a.m. On Monday, the Knipp Family will be serving a pulled pork dinner. Callaway Bank will serve fried chicken on Tuesday, Sons of Confederate Veterans will have a potato bar on Wednesday, the Auxvasse Community will serve turkey and dressing, sponsored by the United Security Bank on Thursday and Pin Oaks Living Center will serve a meatloaf meal on Friday. The week-long celebration will come to a close with the Lions Club holding their half-chicken or pork steak dinner.

The Lions Club will accept used eye glasses for recycling all week. Glasses are recycled and used in eye mission programs in the U.S. and around the world.

All in attendance will be eligible to win two $100 cash gifts, donated by the United Security Bank. Mary Ann Crowson, a member of the Lions club has donated a large hand quilt to be raffled off with all proceeds going to the Community Center. The Lions Club will also be holding a raffle for a Heritage 22 Pistol. The winners will be drawn on the last day of Loafers Week. There will be a drawing each day for a door prize. You do not have to be present to win. All proceeds generated during the week are used for the upkeep of the Community Center.

Loafers Week is a reunion for many local citizens. Everyone is invited to come, enjoy a meal and participate in the planned activities as they “loaf in Auxvasse.”
