BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Community R-6 cruises with big inning in win at Madison

Posted

Though Community R-6 sustained a tough loss the night before, it didn’t have much time to think about it.

The Trojans defeated Central Activities Conference and district foe Madison 17-2 in three innings on Wednesday on the road thanks largely to a 12-run second inning. They finished with 11 hits, and Gavin and Mason Carroll each finished with four RBI.

Neither Allen nor Carroll were on the mound this time as it was the third game in as many days for the Trojans (10-2, 4-0 CAC). Mason Rohan went all three innings, allowing four hits, two runs and one walk and striking out three. Both Madison (0-11, 0-5 CAC) runs crossed in the third inning.

In the first inning, Ayden Meranda stole his first of two bases and six total for Community as he eventually scored. The Trojans took a 3-0 lead after one inning before the floodgates opened in the second inning.

Meranda led off again with a hit by pitch and was one of 17 batters to step in the box as Allen, Carroll, Brant Cope and Pacey Cope were in a chain of four straight RBI hits to make it 8-0 at the time. Carroll picked up another RBI later in the inning to help build a 15-0 lead after two innings.

Community plays at conference and district foe Glasgow (4-7, 1-3 CAC) at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Van-Far comes close to toppling undefeated Montgomery County, loses 7-6

Van-Far was two outs away from an upset on Tuesday night.

Eastern Missouri Conference foe Montgomery County hadn’t lost a conference game and were down 6-3 to start the seventh inning. Van-Far allowed the walk-off to lose 7-6 to stay winless while Montgomery improved to 5-0 in the EMO conference.

Montgomery (7-2) tallied half of its eight hits in the seventh inning off Gibson Condie, who relieved Reece Culwell after his six innings of three runs and five strikeouts. The Wildcats drew three walks in the seventh, which was greater than the two they already had in the game.

The Van-Far (0-10, 0-6 EMO) offense demonstrated good plate discipline yet again on Tuesday as it totaled seven walks to go along with its six hits. Cody Smith and Tarion Aguirre each had two walks while Smith was one of four Indians with an RBI.

Culwell began the scoring with a two-out out in the first inning only for Montgomery to answer back with three runs in the fourth inning for a 3-2 Van-Far deficit.

In the fifth inning, Gibson Condie tied the game with a RBI single, Aguirre drew a walk to plate the go-ahead run and then Dalana Gay bunted for a single to notch her first hit and first RBI. Nikos Connaway doubled in a run to increase the lead to 6-3.

Van-Far played at Bowling Green (7-8, 4-4 EMO) on Thursday. The Indians lost 16-0 in four innings, being limited to three hits, having committed four errors and allowing six extra-base hits.

Van-Far (0-11, 0-7 EMO) plays at Silex (4-6, 3-3 EMO) at 5 p.m. Monday.

Missouri Military Academy sharp right off bat in 13-2 win at Calvary Lutheran

After not scoring a run in the previous two games, Missouri Military Academy posted nine in the first inning on Thursday.

The Colonels won 13-2 in six innings at Calvary Lutheran (2-4) in Jefferson City as six of their players finished with at least a hit and RBI. Luke Wolf led the offense by going 3-for-4 with five RBI, Ethan Hersh followed with 3-for-3, four stolen bases, four runs scored and two RBI, and Michael Moss went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and two stolen bases.

It was clear from the outset that MMA (5-6) was going to have a polar opposite offense game compared to its other two this week. The first seven Colonels reached base, making it 4-0 MMA. Hersh’s second hit of the inning gave him his first RBI and then Wolf’s second hit of the frame brought home his second and third RBI for a 9-0 lead.

Hunter Manderson started the game on the mound for the Colonels, striking out 11 and allowing one unearned run in four innings of one-hit ball. William Delaplane allowed two hits and one unearned run while striking two in one inning.

MMA hosted Fayette (7-4) on Friday before staying home for a 5 p.m. Tuesday game with Van-Far (0-10).

Colonel offense continues skid in 8-0 loss at South Shelby

Missouri Military Academy picked up a couple hits this time.

The Colonels lost 8-0 on Wednesday at South Shelby, mustering a couple of hits following a no-hit 16-0 loss at Harrisburg two days before. MMA struck out 10 times against PJ Schmidt Jr., who didn’t allow any walks.

Avin Hernandez and Charles George each had a hit for the Colonels (4-6).

South Shelby (11-2) hits started leading to runs via a home run against Ethan Hersh — six strikeouts, three hits, three runs and three walks in four innings — in the fourth inning before scoring six runs in the two innings against Hunter Manderson and William Delaplane.

Trojans unable to close out Louisiana in 5-3 loss

Community was inching close to its ninth straight win and a 10-1 record to start the season on Tuesday.

The Trojans couldn’t close the game at home as Louisiana scored four runs in the seventh inning to defeat Community 5-3. The Bulldogs (2-10) loaded the bases to lead off the seventh against Gavin Allen and came through with a pair of clutch hits.

Allen raised his strikeout total to 13 after recording three in the seventh inning, catching one looking for the first out only for an infield single brought two runs home to tie the game at 2. A double to left field pushed the score to 5-2. The senior hurler finished with five hits, five runs and one walk allowed, with two going as unearned due to two errors.

Allen followed his walk-off heroics in a 5-4 win against Central Activities Conference foe New Franklin on Monday at home with another 3-for-4 performance at the plate. He drove in a run as did Eli Johnson, who hit a triple, and Mason Carroll while leadoff hitter Ayden Meranda, who had a double, scored two runs.

Community stranded seven runners and had the bases loaded in the first inning with one out, but two of eight strikeouts recorded by Louisiana pitcher Jack Logan ended that threat. Logan allowed eight of the Trojans’ nine hits and walked two in 6⅓ innings.

Centralia strikes early vs Moberly, Engel but lose 4-1

From the first inning on Tuesday, it appeared Centralia would match Moberly all night.

After scoring once in the first inning, the Panthers lost at home to its district foe 4-1. Moberly pitcher Jackson Engel settled down after allowing two hits to lead off the game but limited Centralia (4-7) to six hits, two walks and one run in seven innings.

Anthony Ford grounded out to score Centralia’s lone run in the first inning to follow a Mason Presley single and Jack Romine double, making it 2-1.

Ethan Adams picked up one of the Panthers’ hits while allowing eight hits in six innings on the mound, recording four strikeouts, three runs (one earned) and one walk.

Moberly (8-8) had four doubles and six stolen bases in the game to apply pressure throughout.

Centralia plays in the Boonville Wood Bat Tournament on Friday and today.
