Austin Maxwell and Mexico came close to victory on Monday at home.
It still wasn't quite enough as the Bulldogs lost 2-1 to North Central Missouri Conference and district foe Moberly (9-2, 3-0 NCMC) to extend overall and conference losing streak to three games. The Class 4 No. 4 Spartans left Mexico runners stranded in scoring position in three of the final four innings, tagging a runner out trying to steal home in the seventh inning before ending the game with a strikeout. Maxwell pitched seven innings with 92 pitches for Mexico (7-4, 0-3 NCMC), finishing with a line of four hits, two walks, one earned run and one strikeout. Cade Bohm pitched six innings for Moberly with six hits, four strikeouts, three walks and one earned run before being taken out after the leadoff hitter reached in the seventh inning. Landon Hilderman went 2-for-3, Sam Ryan finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored and Chance McCarty went 1-for-2 with one RBI and a hit by pitch as Mexico outhit Moberly 7-4. Jackson Engel had two RBI for Moberly in the form of a sacrifice fly and RBI single.
Mexico hosts Lutheran St. Charles (1-8) at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
