Balls were disappearing into the night sky.
Before the football players suited up for their scrimmage at midnight at Hawthorne Heights, the Mexico Bulldogs went next door at Mexico High School to the newly turfed Gallop Field to face the Lady Bulldogs at 9:30 p.m. Friday in the annual home run derby between the athletes. Hannah Loyd won the tournament-style derby followed by football players Kaden Benne, Drew DeMint and Charlie Fisher.
Mexico opens the season on Aug. 29 at the Peoples Bank Back to School Classic in Sullivan. The Lady Bulldogs play a preseason jamboree on Aug. 23 in Palmyra.
