Donation for Phase 2 of building renovations

Callaway County Special Services has donated $50,000 to Serve Inc. to support Phase 2 of renovations for Serve Inc’s’s new facility, according to a news release from Serve Inc.

This contribution marks a significant milestone in the journey to bring all of Serve’s vital services under one roof — enhancing accessibility, efficiency, and dignity for those in need across Callaway County, the release stated.

Serve Inc., a nonprofit social service agency founded in 1972, has long been a cornerstone of support in the region, offering programs such as a food pantry, public transportation, utility assistance, senior volunteer opportunities, and seasonal outreach like Back-to-School and Adopt-A-Family initiatives. Phase 1 of the building renovation is nearing completion and will soon welcome the Trends thrift store into the new space. Phase 2 will allow the food pantry and transportation services to relocate as well, bringing all services together in one centralized, accessible location.

“This donation from Callaway County Special Services is more than financial support, it’s a statement of unity,” said a Serve Inc. spokesperson. “It reflects our shared mission to empower individuals and families, and to build a community where everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive.”

Callaway County Special Services (CCSS) exists to empower people and enrich lives by fostering a community that values and supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Supporting Serve Inc. reflects CCSS’s belief that lasting impact comes through collaboration, working together to remove barriers and create opportunities for all members of our community.

“Our support for Serve, Inc. is about more than funding, it’s about connection,” said Mike Lederle, executive director of CCSS. “When we make essential resources more accessible, we promote dignity, reduce barriers, and strengthen the fabric of our community. This partnership reflects the values that guide us every day: compassion, advocacy, respect, and collaboration.”

Why This Matters

The completion of Phase 2 will transform how Serve operates — streamlining services, reducing transportation burdens, and allowing staff and volunteers to work more effectively. For clients, it means one-stop access to food, clothing, transportation, and support — all in a welcoming, inclusive environment.

This is especially critical for individuals with limited mobility, seniors, and families facing economic hardship. No longer will they need to walk or drive between separate buildings to receive help. Everything will be available in one safe, accessible location, the release stated.

For more than 35 years, CCSS has invested in partnerships that expand access, inclusion, and opportunity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Callaway County. Whether through employment supports, transportation, or community initiatives like this one, CCSS continues to champion person-centered services that empower individuals and strengthen the communities they call home.

Help is Still Needed

While CCSS’s donation is a tremendous boost, Serve Inc. is still actively fundraising to complete Phase 2. Donations are accepted to support the building renovation. Importantly, funds donated for food pantry or services are not utilized for the new facility unless directed toward the new facility.

Every contribution — large or small— brings Serve closer to its goal. Whether you’re a business, a foundation, or a caring neighbor, the public’s support can make a lasting impact.
