The Centralia boys have let some games slip away as of late but snatched one away on Tuesday night.
The Panthers defeated Moberly 42-41 at home after Cullen Bennett hit a game-winner with 2.8 seconds left. Centralia trailed 32-13 at halftime.
In the previous three games, Centralia (5-5) had led or was tied at halftime but lost every one. One of those was against Moberly (5-4) on Centralia’s court in the Centralia Invitational. The Panthers led that day at intermission prior to a 62-54 loss.
Cullen Bennett had a double-double in the previous loss to South Shelby — when the game was tied at halftime — and recorded another of 16 points and 12 rebounds against the Spartans. Bennett’s final points completed the comeback to end a four-game losing streak for the Panthers.
Noah Kropf followed Bennett with 12 points and six rebounds.
Centralia goes into Christmas break and then hosts Bowling Green (3-6) at 7 p.m. Jan. 2.
Before the game, the boys cross country team was presented with the program’s first-ever state Final Four banner after finishing third at the Class 3 MSHSAA Cross Country Championships. Rohan Holiman, Dryst Bostick and Carter Moss were the individual medalists from that day that were there at the ceremony with the rest of the team — Eli Hill, Wesley Robertson, Zane Deckerd, Trenton Brooks and Lane Chancellor — and head coach Jason Watermann. Bostick and Moss also play for the basketball team so they posed with the banner in their basketball gear.
