The Centralia girls are excited for the volleyball season and laying groundwork in the summer.
The Lady Panthers won four out of six sets during the Hallsville team camp on Wednesday, and head coach Julie Crum said they have done well even though the full roster hasn’t been available every night.
Crum said each year brings a new challenge with a new roster. Centralia lost some girls from last year’s team but had some new faces in varsity action this summer.
“I moved two sophomores up that have been doing a great job — setter Karsyn Barnes and middle Maylee Rosenfelder,” Crum said. “We’re building and molding a good team right now. I’m really pleased with what I’ve seen and how they’ve adjusted in the few short weeks that we’ve put new things together.”
Crum said Liz Romine, hitter Ryenn Gordon and Livia Hartley are the returning players with the most consistent court time last year. That means she’s had to fill three spots and has seen what that would look like this summer.
“The way they are filling in together, getting used to each other and working together is very pleasing to me,” Crum said. “They’ve all got tremendous personalities and attitudes. That’s one of the things I’m most impressed with.”
Crum said that “base foundation” is a main goal of the summer because adjusting to new girls along with their skillsets takes time.
“The setters that we have are just beautiful,” Crum said. “Karsyn is just a sophomore, but her hands are nice and soft. Her and Liv are really good at putting the ball where it needs to go for Ryenn Gordon. It’s undeniable (Ryenn) is definitely one of our strengths.”
Centralia plays in the Licking team camp in July to play teams from all over the state in various locations, including Jefferson City.
