It was not the Christmas gift that the Centralia girls wanted.
The Lady Panthers were close to winning their first ever game in the Hy-Vee Arena 12 Courts of Christmas in Kansas City but lost 62-60 on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Diamond. Centralia took a 52-46 lead after scoring 24 points in the third quarter but had their seven-game winning streak snapped.
Class 3 No. 10 Centralia played in its first 12 Courts of Christmas event, which is in its third year and features more than 250 Midwest teams. Head coach Megan Brinkmann said some spring schedule changes gave the Lady Panthers a rare opportunity to play at a new venue against a Diamond (11-1) team they wouldn’t usually see. The Lady Wildcats went 2-0 at the event this year after defeating Lamar 61-51 the previous day.
“Even though we didn't come away with a win, it gave us an opportunity to see some things we can get better at and work on for the second half of our season after Christmas,” Brinkmann said.
Freshman Ryenn Gordon led Centralia (7-2) with 18 points while sophomore Braylin Brunkhorst had 16 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Rounding out the double-digit scorers were seniors Raegan Anderson at 12 points and Morgan Ross with 10 points and five rebounds.
Centralia hosts Bowling Green (3-7) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
