Colonels advance to first ever soccer state title game

Missouri Military Academy is going to its first ever soccer state championship game.

The No. 3 Colonels (17-4) defeated St. Pius X (Kansas City) (17-10-1) 2-1 in the Class 1 semifinals Wednesday afternoon at Harlen C. Hunter Stadium at Lindenwood University in St. Charles. After a scoreless first half, MMA scored first in the 49th minute (ninth minute of the second half) on a breakaway goal from Alex McBride. Leading scorer Fernando Puebla knocked in a goal in the 68th minute in the midst of the St. Pius X defense. Puebla scored his 37th goal, and St. Pius X leading scorer Jackson Horst scored his 39th goal two minutes later. MMA held a slight shot advantage at 12-11, and saves were even at seven apiece.

MMA faces No. 1 Valley Park (24-3) at 6 p.m. Thursday at Hunter Stadium.
