Colonels capture first state soccer trophy since 1992, finish as runner-up

Posted

It was a rough start for Missouri Military Academy on Thursday night but was still a proud end.

No. 3 MMA lost the Class 1 soccer state championship game 4-0 to No. 1 Valley Park at Harlen C. Hunter Stadium at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, missing out on its first state title but earning its first state trophy since 1992 in the program's second ever Final Four appearance. The Colonels (17-5) allowed two goals within the first three minutes and three goals within the first 15 minutes in their first ever state title game but shut out the Hawks (25-3) in the second half. The four goals is the most allowed by MMA since a 4-2 loss on Oct. 5 at Father Tolton as the Colonels went into the game with a nine-game winning streak, allowing seven goals during that span. Valley Park ended the season with an eight-game winning streak to win its first ever soccer state championship, and William Geary's seven goals (two against MMA) during the Final Four set a new record.

The excitement was there all day for the momentous game as the Colonels were sent off from Mexico in the afternoon by numerous cheers and car horns.
