Community R-6 girls basketball is coming off five straight 20-win seasons and the excitement for the program hasn’t dimmed.

The Lady Trojans have had about 17 girls play shootout games in the summer, including four that have taken place at Community R-6 High School in Laddonia. On June 23, they hosted North Callaway, Sturgeon and Pilot Grove and welcomed North Callaway, Wellsville-Middletown and Silex on June 28.

Head coach Bob Curtis said the girls had much success during the offseason in the summer, with varsity playing to an almost undefeated record. He said it is a good sign with the Lady Trojans’ new roster after graduating seniors Alexis Welch, Paige Meyer and Shelby Clark — a group that led Community to a 23-4 record a season ago.

“We weren’t sure who would respond,” Curtis said. “We’ve had a lot of girls try to fill those holes and work hard because it’s their turn. I feel like all of them are playing hard and improving everyday.”

The girls’ level of excitement makes Curtis look forward to the season during the winter as most of them have shown up to all the team’s workouts and practices along with the shootouts, he said.

With the time he has left with the girls this summer, there are a few things Curtis said he hopes the team can improve on.

“We just teach mentality — playing hard, basketball IQ, the ability to run our sets properly and keep your girl down defensively,” Curtis said. “Can you stay in front of your girl, check out, go get the ball and help your team win?”
