The Community R-6 girls have had some slow offensive starts this season.
Tuesday’s at Van-Far didn’t mean a loss was in the Lady Trojans’ future as they defeated the Lady Indians 47-28. Community (6-4) took a 20-18 lead at halftime before holding Van-Far (1-8) to 10 points in the second half.
Community head coach Bob Curtis said defense was definitely working throughout the game and that helped the offense and showed the Lady Trojans’ growth this season.
“It was a slow start but did a nice job in our half-court trap, forcing some turnovers that lead to easy layups,” Curtis said. “This game shows how far we've come. The first two weeks of the season, it was hard for us to win if we didn't shoot it well.”
Peyton Beamer led the Lady Trojans with 12 points and five assists, Kylie Brooks had yet another double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, Aaliyah Welch had 11 points and eight rebounds, and Brooklynn Glasgow finished with eight points.
“Our balanced offensive attack makes us hard to guard as we usually have several with around double figures,” Curtis said.
Community R-6 plays Central Activities Conference foe New Franklin (6-4) at 2 p.m. Dec. 30 in the first round of the New Franklin Basketball Tournament. Van-Far plays Harrisburg (3-6) on Dec. 30 in the Moberly Area Community College Shootout in Moberly.
